What’s even better is that our team has scouted out and listed the top ones you absolutely need to check out—whether you’re looking for luxury recliners, Dolby surround sound, or just a fresh change of scenery.

ByTowne Cinema stands out as a moviegoer’s treasure, blending nostalgic charm with modern amenities. The seating is comfortable, the screens are large, and the sound system is fantastic.

Plus, their concessions—popcorn, wine, and beers—enhance the watching experience. During our visit, we were impressed by their diverse film offerings, ranging from indie gems to international classics—perfect for any film enthusiast.

We even participated in their Drunken Cinema event and had a blast! This interactive experience, complete with customised cards and glow sticks, kept us engaged all throughout.

However, we did notice that while the cinema is generally clean, there are times when it’s not tidied up between screenings. But overall, we find the positives far outweigh this minor drawback.

Something to not miss is ByTowne Cinema’s membership program, which offers great perks like discounted tickets and access to exclusive events!

Pros

  • Diverse film selection
  • Comfortable seating
  • Large screens
  • Friendly staff
  • Exclusive memberships
  • Fun events

Cons

  • Inconsistent cleaning between movies
  • Some lighting remains on during screenings

Unique atmosphere and cosy vibe

“ByTowne Cinema is a gem for movie lovers in Ottawa. We enjoyed the unique atmosphere and cozy vibe of this classic cinema. The selection of films is fantastic, often featuring indie, international, and classic movies you won’t find elsewhere. The seats are comfortable, and the screen quality is excellent. The staff is friendly and helpful, adding to the overall great experience.”

Fantastic and diverse programming

“This is an Ottawa Gem! I really enjoy a movie night here. Supporting local helps our community thrive over big chain theatres. The Bytowne’s programming is awesome with films that don’t hit the mainstream. You can’t beat the pricing, especially with the membership. The staff is always super friendly and welcoming. Real butter on the popcorn! They also have wine and beer. The seats are always really comfortable.”

Landmark Cinemas prioritises comfort with its diverse seating options. Whether you’re into reclining seats, premiere seats, or loungers, there’s something here for everyone.

We particularly appreciate these varieties when we avail ourselves of their 3D options—IMAX is available too! The cleanliness and attention to detail in the theatre and bathrooms were also a big plus in our books!

Another noteworthy aspect is the availability of several conveniences like food stalls and an arcade area, adding extra fun to the visit.

The customer service stood out to us too—friendly and helpful staff contributed to a welcoming atmosphere. They also offer numerous deals throughout the week, which we found great for saving money.

We’re just a bit iffy about the prices on some food items, with many of the patrons mentioning the slightly overpriced popcorn. We must also mention that they have a no-cash policy and that booking online incurs an additional fee.

On a brighter note, the cinema’s location is super convenient with easy access and plenty of parking.

Pros

  • Diverse seating options
  • IMAX and 3D availability
  • Comfortable and clean environment
  • Friendly customer service
  • Convenient location with ample parking
  • Variety of food stalls and arcade area
  • Multiple weekly deals

Cons

  • Pricey food items

Feels like home in comfort

“We were the only ones in the theater so it was like being at home.  The reclining seats are so comfortable.  Bathrooms are always clean.  We didn’t get a chance to get any popcorn because we got there late.  I live by the airport and go all the way out to Kanata to the movies.  That must tell you something.  Excellent place for a movie date.”

-Lesslee, Google Review

Outstanding customer service and cleanliness

“Comfortable seats you lounge onto putting your feet up.  Only theatre i will go to.  Very friendly helpful staff.  Great attention to cleanliness and sanitized.  Nice snack choices,  with reasonable dinner options nearby.”

Cineplex Cinemas consistently has an excellent selection of family-friendly movies. And, if you’re into a more immersive experience, their AVX and 3D options add to the viewing pleasure.

We love how the place is exceptionally spacious, and the parking facilities are abundant! There are also popcorn, concession stalls, and an arcade area for that extra layer of fun.

As for the seating, the recliners are generally comfortable. However, a few of us think that some could use an upgrade because the leather covers on a few seats are peeling off. Many of the patrons agreed with us on this part.

Cineplex Cinemas’s membership perks are nice. We’re just a bit iffy about exclusive VIP options for certain movies, which can feel limiting for non-members.

Pros

  • Great selection of family-friendly movies
  • Excellent AVX and 3D options
  • Spacious theatre and parking area
  • Variety of concession stalls
  • Fun arcade area
  • Membership perks

Cons

  • Some recliners need upgrading
  • Limited movie options for non-members

Incline seats for maximum comfort

“One of my favourite movie theaters in Ottawa. They offer incline seats for maximum comfort. Spacious interior with lots of popcorn and concession stalls! Downstairs include an arcade area as well. Lots of parking.”

-Ng Alan, Google Review

Friendly staff and neat environment

“Easily my favourite movie theatre in Ottawa! Every theatre has reclining seats, which ample space. Staff are always friendly and accommodating. Plenty of parking in front of and beside the theatre. Lots of food and snack spots if you want to go before the movie and grab those. The arcade is always fun for the kids, and the place is always neat and tidy. Had the saltiest bag of popcorn over the weekend and was very happy”

Mayfair Theatre oozes old-school charm and has become a local favourite for its curated selection of classic and independent films. However, this focus means that showtimes for the latest movies might be limited.

The seating here has a vintage vibe but is still pretty comfortable. Adding to the nostalgic appeal is their weekly Mayfair Theatre flyer, which enhances the vintage experience, making every visit feel like a delightful step back in time.

There’s also a small popcorn stall and candy bar, perfect for grabbing a quick snack before settling into your seat. On the downside, the Mayfair Theatre’s single-screen format can make the space feel a bit cramped.

Though, location-wise, it’s pretty easy to get to, and we found parking to be quite convenient. We also appreciate how they diligently adhere to health measures, with hand sanitisers readily available.

Pros

  • Curated selection of classic and independent films

  • Adherence to Covid measures
  • Convenient popcorn stall and candy bar

“Where do I start? The staff was great, the prices were affordable compared to other movie theatres, the architecture, the atmosphere.

Great movies as well. Thank you for having us Mayfair Theatre. What a wonderful business. Please go, you will not regret it.”

-Macaroon Skyes, Google Review

Top-notch programming and events

“When people ask us what we like about living in Ottawa, the Mayfair is at the top of the list. Great programming, lovely staff and the popcorn is the best in town. We’ve also been members for a couple of years now, and not only has it saved us money on tickets, but the special Members-Only events (Sinema, Oscars night, etc.) are always a fun time.”

Managed by a passionate crew of volunteers, Ottawa Family Cinema isn’t just about showing films; it’s about creating a unique community vibe.

We were impressed by the cinema’s state-of-the-art technology, featuring digital 3-D projectors and Dolby Digital 7.1 surround sound.

Overall, we loved everything about this place, especially its massive screen, comfy seating, food stall selection, and spacious parking. Plus, you can virtually tour the theatre online before visiting—a neat bonus!

Another thing we appreciated was their wide range of events—from stage shows and talent presentations to local movie premieres and fun community events.

Their initiative is commendable too—all the proceeds go back to the community via the Family Movie Trust Fund.

We’re just a tad bummed about their limited hours. They only operate on Fridays and Saturdays, which can be limiting if you’re trying to squeeze in a movie night mid-week.

Pros

  • Digital 3-D projectors and Dolby Digital 7.1
  • Huge screen and comfortable seating
  • Free and spacious parking
  • Online tour available
  • Proceeds benefit the community

Cons

  • Limited operation (Friday and Saturday)

Exceptional 3D technology

“A hidden gem. Without exaggeration, this cinema features one of the best 3D systems you’ll see in your life! Dolby 3D is very rare and these volunteers have taken care to ensure that it looks amazing.”

-Noah Kruiper, Google Review

Inclusive and non-profit

“Amazingly well run organization. Kids get a great experience. Movies look great. Accessible to all. Plus it’s a non-profit! Community families with lower income get to have opportunities to go to the movies too!”
