Top 6 Ottawa Universities to Explore (And Why They’re Worth the Stroll!)

ottawa-universities-to-explore

When my niece called me one morning from Vancouver, I thought it was a typical ‘I need advice’ kind of chat. Turns out, she wasn’t looking for tips on her latest Netflix binge; she was calling to tell me she wanted to move to Ottawa—for school!

And get this: she wants to stay with me because, apparently, I’m ‘the cool uncle’ (her words, not mine). That’s how I ended up combing through every university in the city, trying to figure out which schools could offer her the best of the best.

Let me tell you, Ottawa’s got some amazing universities to visit, whether you’re looking to study or strolling through as a visitor. I’ve listed all of them below, so you’d better check them out!

Established in 1848, the University of Ottawa is a bilingual university (English-French) and is one of the oldest in the country, which continues to thrive as a major player in the city’s educational scene.

Once you visit, you’ll find beautifully preserved buildings mixed with sleek, modern architecture—they’re lovely to see in person!

If you enjoy wandering, a visit to the Tabaret Hall should be high on your list. It’s arguably the university’s most iconic building, with its elegant columns standing tall on the front steps.

The campus is pretty easy to navigate, and there’s plenty to explore beyond just the academic side. You might want to check out the Morisset Library as well, or take time to stroll through the green spaces sprinkled throughout the grounds.

Pro tip:

If you’re a prospective student, the university offers campus tours where you’ll get insider info on its programmes and a deeper dive into what it’s like to be a student here. Bonus: there’s easy access to the Rideau Canal from the campus!

Now, Carleton University is a little different but equally incredible. Founded in 1942, this university was established to provide higher education to veterans returning from World War II.

What makes Carleton such a standout is its location right alongside the Rideau River. Additionally, the main campus features fascinating architectural contrasts, from its modern science buildings to the vintage-style Paterson Hall.

Another standout is its art gallery, which showcases striking exhibits—well worth a stop if you’re passing through. The student-run innovations showcased on the campus, like projects from their engineering labs that might be displayed during certain events, are also worth seeing!

Pro tip:

Remember to look out for the university’s campus tours that include the tunnels—a unique underground system connecting several of its buildings. This is also especially helpful if you’re planning to visit during the winter.
